Garden Capital of Texas Committee to Enhance Millard's Crossing Chapel
The Garden Capital of Texas is preparing for a major planting project on Friday, January 27 at Millard's Crossing Historic Village.
The project will beautify the 1905 chapel, one of the most frequently used structures in the historic village. Plans include planting antique roses on one side of the chapel, azaleas on the other side and climbing roses at the entrance. If you would like to help with the planting, please bring your boots, work gloves, shovel and a friend! We will start planting at 9 am and hope to be finished by noon.
This large-scale planting is made possible because of the generous gardeners who participated in the Home Garden Tour last May. More than 120 tickets were sold, and the participating gardeners worked hard to make sure their landscapes were groomed and ready for the steady stream of plant lovers who strolled through their thoughtfully cultivated yards.
The Garden Capital Committee is using all of the money made from the Home Garden Tours to make a big impact at the beautiful historic village. Dawn Stover has worked with Tracie Lassiter at Millard's Crossing on the plant material selection and layout and design, and the Garden Capital committee hopes to have all the new plants in the ground before wedding season begins.
"We are thankful for the interest in beautifying our facility," Lassiter said. "We're grateful this huge planting will be completed by volunteers who care about preserving and sharing our community's history."
The Garden Capital of Texas and its partners, Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, The City of Nacogdoches, Texas A& M Forest Service and the Nacogdoches Parks Advocacy League have planted close to 600 trees in Nacogdoches over the past four years. We started by planting ninety nine fringe trees in Banita Creek Park North at our first Arbor Day Celebration; this year the Arbor Day celebration for the entire state of Texas was held in Nacogdoches at Millard's Crossing!
