Jared Barnes awarded 2017 Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Sustainability Award

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful awarded the 2017 Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Sustainability Award to Dr. Jared Barnes at the SFA Gardens Earth Day event on April 1.

Dr. Barnes and some of the students volunteers that work with him posed for a photo after receiving the award.

Dr. Jared Barnes holds his award. Barnes joined SFA in 2014 and has since made great advancements towards his goal of doubling the enrollment for the horticulture program. Barnes expanded and redesigned the gardens around the Agriculture Building, attracting more students. These gardens now provide the University student-grown produce for a weekly market, Sprouts, held behind the Agriculture Building.

The 2017 Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Sustainability Award was an authentic tree cookie from the Nacogdoches area donated by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Grant Wheeler with the Texas A&M Forest Service donated the time to cut and sand the tree cookie for the award.
